WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Washington County Sheriff Jay Cantrell announced today that it will take part in the national "drive sober or get pulled over" enforcement campaign ahead of the holiday season.
The campaign, led by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), works to get drunk drivers off the road while people are traveling for holiday festivities and vacations.
A release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) says that law enforcement will be working together to from Dec. 15 through Jan 1 to keep the roads clear of drunk drivers.
The release says that thousands die every December in drunk driving crashes.
"According to the NHTSA, during the 2017-2021 December months, there were more than 4,500 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes," the release said.
