WISTER, Okla. — The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) said water leaking from the Wister Dam is not a danger to properties downstream.
Water levels had recently dropped due to the drought. However, the Army Corps said the water moving through the gate seals is roughly the same amount as the water supply demand.
USACE said the gates are operational and currently in closed positions.
"If this discharge was not occurring, we would open the gates to allow a similar flow from the reservoir," USACE said.
The gates have been used since the dam's construction between 1946 and 1949. After operating for over 75 years, USACE said the gates have reached their design service life, which explains the leak.
The Army Corps said the gates are expected to be replaced within the next three years.
