Work on $24k Fayetteville mural now underway

The 90-foot-long mural is expected to be complete in June.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — An artist has been selected and work is underway on a $24,000 mural on Nelson Hackett Boulevard in Fayetteville.

The 90-foot-long addition to city's growing collection of public art is now being worked on by Fayetteville-based artist Joëlle Storet, according to a release.

"Storet, who immigrated to the United States from Austria in 2001 and draws inspiration from her Belgian-Congolese upbringing, was selected for the project by the Fayetteville Arts Council, in collaboration with members of the Historic District Commission and Black Historic Preservation Commission," the city said.

The deadline for the completed mural is June 15.

The city says that portions of the sidewalk and buffer space on the street may be blocked off temporarily during the project. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to be aware of ongoing work in the area.

The project's request for proposals was issued in March, calling for a "single, site-specific mural that reflects themes of movement, justice, and connectivity." The piece will blend into the "Experience the Adventure of Fayetteville" mural that was installed in 2022.

Storet says that her vision for the piece reflects that. It will reportedly include a depiction of Nelson Hackett, as well as landmarks and local historical figures, working to accomplish the goal of "showcasing history and diversity.”

Joanna Sheehan Bell, the Arts and Culture Director for the city, says that Storet’s mural will "enhance the visual landscape of the area and foster community engagement," according to the release.

The project is just one of a few hoping to cover the 500-foot-long retaining wall on Nelson Hackett ahead of Fayetteville's 2028 bicentennial.

The stipend for the project is $24,000, which covers artists fees and materials.
