HIGHFILL, Ark. — The Northwest Arkansas National Airport's (XNA) Board of Directors approved a bid on Dec. 19 with Crossland Construction Company, Inc., to begin contract negotiations for a new control tower.
XNA plans for the new 125-foot tower to serve both the current runway and a potential second runway. The current tower is 57 feet.
"The project is long overdue because the current tower was never really intended to be a permanent tower," Olivia Tyler, XNA public affairs manager, said in a press release.
Although there is no construction schedule yet, XNA estimates that the control tower will take around two years to build.
"The project is long overdue because the current tower was never really intended to be a permanent tower. So the new tower is going to pave the way for a potential second runway in the future" said Olivia Tyler, the XNA public affairs manager.
The total estimated cost to build the tower is around $7.5 million dollars.
Although there is no construction schedule yet, XNA estimates the control tower will take around two years to build. They told 5NEWS there will be no effect on passengers or aircrafts.
