Here's what will be open and closed on Thanksgiving 2024

While most stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, there are a few exceptions.

SAN FRANCISCO — If you put the "pro" in procrastination or forgot a must-have for dinner, you're not out of luck if you need to stock up on a few last-minute supplies on Thanksgiving Day this year. 

Most big box stores like Walmart, Target and Costco will stay closed on Thanksgiving this year, but some grocery stores and pharmacies will stay open with adjusted hours. 

Here's a look at what will be open and what will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. 

Stores open on Thanksgiving 2024

This is a national list, and hours may vary locally. While some locations of these stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day, expect adjusted hours or early closures depending on location, and check with your local store for exact hours.

  • CVS (locations are set to be open at normal hours, but may vary)
  • Kroger grocery stores (Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Gerbes, King Soopers, Kroger, Pick’n Save, QFC, Ralphs and others)
  • Meijer
  • Whole Foods 
  • Raley's & Bel Air

Is Target open on Thanksgiving?

No, Target will be closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2024. While the company regularly was open on Thanksgiving before the COVID-19 pandemic, this will mark the fifth year in a row that Target's doors will remain shut for the holiday. And don't expect that to change anytime soon. Target announced in 2021 that it would permanently no longer open its stores on Thanksgiving Day.

For the second consecutive year, Walgreens announced the pharmacy chain's stores would not be open for Thanksgiving in 2024.

Will mail be delivered on Thanksgiving?

As is the case with all federal holidays, the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail Thursday, Nov. 28 in observance of Thanksgiving. Post offices across the U.S. will be closed for the holiday and mail delivery will be paused and resume Friday. 

Stock market:

The New York Stock Exchange observes U.S. holidays, so the stock market will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Government offices:

 State, local and federal offices are closed on Thanksgiving.
