Benton County poll workers notice Arkansans flocking to the ballot box this election

Benton County poll workers say early voting has been busy, exciting, and overall safe across the county locations.

ROGERS, Ark. — Dana Hutton and Jim Womble only have one election cycle under their belt but feel more than prepared to do their part for the November election.

"I saw it on the news, and I thought, 'Oh, that'd be interesting to learn,'" Hutton, the assistant supervisor of the Sunnyside Baptist Church polling location, said. "So, I learned everything I could from the election and I wanted to get involved."

On the other hand, Supervisor Womble said he was looking for ways to help his community.

"I'm retired and just wanted to give back to the community," Womble said.

Since early voting started over a week ago, Hutton said they’ve had on average about 500 to 750 people come to vote at the church.

"When the poll workers come in, we set up the polls and we make sure that they're open for the day," Hutton said. "Our facility here starts at 8 a.m., cleaning the machines and making sure everything's ready to go."

Womble said it’s rewarding connecting with local voters.

"We have an elderly group of people that come here [to] east Rogers," Womble said. "A lot of them need help getting in and out of the building, and we like helping them do that."

Unlike other areas across the nation, Rogers poll workers have had a very safe experience. Womble said Rogers is a safe community and poll workers undergo training to know what to look out for in case something does go wrong.

"I have not experienced anything in the two elections I've done that even made me think any more of it," he said.

Hutton said it's undeniable that voters are eager this election cycle.

"People are helping others come in, like their neighbors, and that's exciting to see," Hutton said. "Everyone should vote and have a voice in it ... Even the future voters. We had a young lady come in with four kids, and she wanted to teach them how to vote."
