GOSHEN, Ark. — Goshen residents voted against an annexation initiative that would have expanded the city.
The project would have absorbed nearby unincorporated lands into city limits in hopes of addressing the area's growing population. The city also had the goal of providing people living on unincorporated land access to municipal services.
Before Election Day, some residents in Goshen and those in the proposed annexation area had concerns about the initiative.
"The passage of this measure ensures we experience tax increases in both property tax and sales tax forever for a town that we do not visit," Kevin Farmer, who lives in the proposed annexation area, said in October. "All our lives are lived in Fayetteville and Springdale. We shop there. We go to the doctor. We have professional services. We have our careers and our lives. Our children go to school in these towns, not in Goshen, and it's just simply a money grab."
These concerns seemed to have translated to the polls after the initiative failed with residents voting 73% against it.
