CROSS COUNTY, Ark. — The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is reporting that a bridge has collapsed in Northeast Arkansas.

The bridge collapse was reported by ARDOT on June 28.

According to a release from ARDOT, the Highway 42 Bridge over the St. Francis River in Coldwater had been closed since Nov. 2, 2023, due to structural concerns.

"It is too early to know the contributing factor that led to the collapse of the bridge. ARDOT engineers are currently onsite to evaluate," the release said.

The wooden bridge was 56 years old, and weaknesses had been identified in the columns supporting the bridge, prompting it to be shut down to the public. No injuries were reported after the collapse, according to ARDOT.

Repairs to the bridge were set to begin this summer, and ARDOT says it had been working with a consultant to determine a course of action for the repairs.

ARDOT provided the following detour options in the release:

  • Traffic traveling east on Hwy 42 from Birdeye will be detoured south on Hwy 75 then east on Hwy 64 to the intersection of Hwy 149. From the intersection of Hwy 149 and Hwy 64, traffic will be detoured north on Hwy 149 to the intersection of Hwy 42.
  • Traffic traveling west on Hwy 42 will be detoured south on Hwy 149 to the intersection of Hwy 64 at Earle then west on Hwy 64 to the intersection of Hwy 75. From the intersection of Hwy 64 and Hwy 75, traffic will be detoured north on Hwy 75 to the intersection of Hwy 42.
