Eureka Springs 'Moonlight Before Eclipse' concert to host local legends
The concert promises a "magical Evening with carefully curated songs inspired by the celestial dance of the moon and sun."
On April 8, 2024, the Great American Solar Eclipse is set to pass straight over Arkansas, leading to what officials predict will be the "largest tourist event in Arkansas history."
Huge parts of Arkansas will experience totality— but even the parts that don't will be at least 90% covered.
The day before, on April 7, many musicians are gathering in Eureka Springs to host a "Moonlight Before Eclipse" concert. Musician and business owner Aviva Tu invites eclipse travelers to "Immerse yourself in a musical journey featuring the timeless sounds of Sound Journey, the collaboration of improv guitar and violin, and the ethereal beauty of a piano solo resonating with the iconic Moonlight Sonata."
The concert offers a "magical Evening with carefully curated songs inspired by the celestial dance of the moon and sun," writes Tu.
Featured musicians include Aviva Tu herself, Doug and Maya Powell, Tim Hillwood, Catherine Reed, and LeRoy Gorrell.

Aviva Tu Piano / Violin
On her website, Tu is listed as a "classically trained musician from Taiwan who has been playing both the piano and violin" since she was young. She attended the Shanghai Music Conservatory from 2002-2009 and graduated from the National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan with a double major in piano and violin.
She moved to the U.S. to study musical performance in Chicago, and now plays music in Eureka Springs, where she was featured in a 5NEWS article about musicians at the War Eagle Craft Fair in October 2023.
Tim Hillwood Guitar
Solo guitarist Tim Hillwood has covered genres from folk to jazz to new age, and everywhere in between. No matter the genre, his original music "comes from an intention to uplift and inspire."
Catherine Reed Vocals / Guitar
Local legend Catherine Reed has been playing music in Eureka Springs since moving there almost three decades ago. According to her website, her style is often compared to icons like James Taylor, Nora Jones, Eva Cassidy, and Joni Mitchell— "Her magical smile and joyous energy are very much a part of the experience listeners come back for."
LeRoy Gorrell Vocals / Harmonica
LeRoy Gorrell says the smartest thing he ever did was marry his wife Sally. Beyond that, he has an impressive resume covering not just music, but publishing and banking. He still plays a mean harmonica though.
Doug and Maya Powell Sound Journey
Doug and Maya Powell, the owners of a sanctuary that offers retreats "focused on service in loving humanity, singing devotional songs and sound journeys" are set to play at the concert. They recently converted a Mercedes Sprinter Van into an RV, and now travel around with over 30 instruments.
