Athlete of the Week: Layne Taylor

Taylor recently scored his 3,000th point in a game against Huntsville.

FARMINGTON, Ark. — Farmington senior Layne Taylor is setting milestones and breaking records.

"I'm on a list with really cool guys, all-time leading scores in the state," said Layne. "I passed Austin Reeves a couple of games ago, which was cool."

There's one thing left for him to achieve: a state title.

"Last year, we lost in the Final Four and the year before that it was the elite eight," said Layne. "I feel like we've had good chances, but it runs out. I think this is our best chance to win.  It's my last shot."

With that as motivation, Layne has been leading this team by example.

"He's been a leader for us ever since the ninth grade as our point guard," said Layne's head coach Johnny Taylor. "He's in charge of the ball. He's the second coach on the floor."

This run to state means more to Layne because the person on the sidelines is not only his head coach but his father too.

"It's been really special for me," said Coach Taylor. "This is our life and getting to enjoy it and celebrate it with my son. his success has been huge."

The numbers, the accolades, and the awards are great, but it's the little moments that eclipse them all.

"I've been trying for years to be able to do this with my dad," said Layne. "It's always been a dream of mine."

There's plenty of basketball left to close out Layne's last season as a Cardinal, and he's soaking in every minute of it.

"It's really about who I'm playing with— being able to play with my teammates and just have fun," said Layne.
