BENTONVILLE, Ark. — It was destined for Bentonville senior cornerback Will Fusselman to play at Tiger Stadium.
"My dad used to coach for the Bentonville Tigers when I was younger so it's kind of life's coming full circle," said Fusselman. "I used to high-five them after the games and now I'm a senior."
In his last year as a Tiger, he's trying his hardest to bring the school its first state title in ten years.
"I think we have a really strong defense this year," said Fusselman. "Past years, our offense has been really heavy. We have a solid offense and defense this year, and we're hoping to finally get over the hump at championship."
While his team is on the journey to state, Fusselman is on a journey of his own to improve this season.
"Last year was a battle to get on the field a little bit," said Fusselman. "I just want to do my best for the team this year."
Last season, Fusselman began the year on JV but soon earned a spot on the varsity roster where he had one interception.
"My first varsity game, I was so stressed out beforehand," said Fusselman. "I was like, 'What's it going to be like?' I'd only played special teams on varsity before but then you kind of get in the groove, and it's not so bad."
Now in 2024, he's one of the main cornerbacks for head coach Jody Grant. Fusselman is looking to lead this defense all the way into December.
"I pray before every game for calmness, to do my best, and just be encouraging," said Fusselman. "I don't want anyone to get down on me, so I don't get down on anyone else and encourage everybody, and just hope everyone does our best for our team."
