FORT SMITH, Ark. — Today, people in Fort Smith are coming together to remember a former athletic director for the Fort Smith Public Schools district, Jim Rowland.

Rowland passed away on July 25 at the age of 83.

A legend in the world of Fort Smith sports, Rowland was the athletics director for both Northside and Southside High School from 1991 to 2016.

Rowland worked for the Fort Smith School District for 53 years.

5NEWS spoke with current athletic director Michael Beaumont, who says that Rowland still has an impact on the athletic department.

"A lot of the policies, procedures, and things that involved athletics and activities come from the Coach Rowland era.... it's something that Coach Rowland set for our department," Beaumont said.

An Arkansas native, Rowland was originally from Little Rock where he went to Little Rock Central. He went to college at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Rowland's death was announced via the Northside High School Booster Club.

"Fort Smith has lost a legend and a hero this evening with the passing of Jim Rowland. He will be greatly missed as he touched so many lives. Our prayers are with his family," the post said.

Fort Smith Public Schools gave the following statement:

"Today, we honor the memory of Jim Rowland, a beloved FSPS coach, assistant principal, and athletic director. Jim dedicated his life to the students and community of Fort Smith Public Schools, leaving a legacy of commitment, leadership, and passion.
