FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — Arkansas Gymback senior Jensen Scalzo's dad, Jerry, is apart of the parents' hype train before the team leaves the hotel for away meets by showing where Jensen gets her talent from.
"We have a really good traveling family," said Jensen. "We'd see them through the window and we'd call the hogs. Then on a random meet, he just did a handstand."
"I mean the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree, right?" Jerry said.
This apple didn't stay too close to the tree when Jensen decided to commit to Arkansas rather than staying close to her parents in Florida, but Jerry's support was there from the start.
"One time I visited the campus, I was actually with my mom," Jensen said. "The second time I was here with him. I actually committed on campus. I was like, 'I want to go here like this is where I'm going.'"
Jensen's happiness of choosing the right school translated to success especially this season on the uneven bars. She hasn't scored lower than a 9.825 in the first three meets of the season.
"I couldn't be more proud," Jerry said.
As their time in the Gymback program winds down, both Jensen and Jerry have left their marks.
"I think it means so much to me as because it means so much to the team too," said Jensen. "It just it brings the energy and it's a fun piece so we add in our team just do well when we're having fun."
Arkansas gymnastics is on the road at LSU this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
