FORT SMITH (KFSM) - It would be easy for Billy Sims to sit at home and think about his great college career or even his bar-b-que business.
Instead he's giving back to area youth.
Sims was on hand for the annual Gordon Youth Foundation Scholarship Banquet Saturday night at Fianna Hills Country Club to help recognize area students.
The Gordon Youth Foundation helps students from both Arkansas and Oklahoma with scholarships for college who might not be able to afford the chance to further their education and it's a cause that Sims is more than happy to help win.
"Any time I can lend my name or the Heisman winner can lend their name to a charity, definitely dealing with the youth here in Fort Smith, Arkansas, I'm always available and try to be involved with that because at one time I was a youth," Sims said. "Any time I can be involved, I'm more than happy to do so for a great cause."
Sims was the keynote speaker for the second straight year. Sims won the 1978 Heisman Trophy while a running back at the University of Oklahoma. Sims rushed for 1,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. Sims finished second in the Heisman voting the following season after rushing for 1,506 yards and scoring 22 touchdowns.
Sims also talked about the upcoming OU season. You can catch what he had to say about the Sooners' chances to win the first ever college football playoff below.
