DECATUR (KFSM) - Six seniors played their last game Thursday night at Decatur.
"I'm hoping that their legacy that they've left to the younger kids pays off," Decatur coach John Unger said. "Our practices are very intense and I'm hoping they've left something special here."
The legacy this group is leaving is a great one . The Bulldogs in this senior class have gone 35-6 in conference with only one home loss along with three district titles.
"It's sort of cliche but, it's hard work. You know, it's the kids who show up all the time in the summer. Sort of the gym rats. The kids who are always wanting to stay here all the time until 5:30 or 6 pm," Unger said.
They've come a long way from where this program was before.
"Senior high basketball when we were freshman here, it started pretty slow," senior point guard Victor Urquidi said. "We only won two games. But, we knew we were young. We had a chance, we had potential. Our sophomore year we showed our conference we could win and we were a good team."
They've kept proving their potential since then. But even though they've been so successful, they haven't been able to break their post season slump.
"Winning our district and going to regionals, but we had some flaws. We kind of screwed up on regionals and we lost. And it ended up happening again our junior year," Urquidi said.
The Decatur Bulldogs may be the dark horse in the post season, and the team to keep an eye out for. The once unknown team is now looking to make a name for themselves.
"I feel like we aren't very known, but after these three years more and more people are going to realize we have been a great team, and we're going to be a great team," Urquidi said.
Their motto is the third year's the charm.
