Close call turns into victory for Razorbacks women's basketball

The two teams exchanged leads 14 times and saw seven ties over the four quarters.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Arkansas women's basketball team (16-6, 4-3) moved one game above .500 in conference play with a 67-58 win against Missouri (11-10, 2-6) on Sunday, Jan. 28.

This victory, however, didn't come without hiccups. The two teams exchanged leads 14 times and saw seven ties over the four quarters.

The Tigers concluded the first quarter with an 18-13 lead after a 7-0 run. With the help of Arkansas' Saylor Poffenbarger and Karley Johnson, the Hogs made their comeback. By half-time, the Hogs took back the lead 29-28.

In the third quarter, the Tigers and Razorbacks kept the game tight with several ties. Missouri broke the tie with a 3-point play, but Arkansas' Jenna Lawrence eventually beat the buzzer and took back the lead at the end of the third, 49-48.

Just shy of tying the school record, Poffenbarger made a career-high eight 3-pointers. It was also a special game for her because she was playing against her mother's, Amy Fordham, former team for Alumni Night at Missouri.

Head coach Mike Neighbors said Poffenbarger playing in front of her mom's former team helped her up the intensity.

"I got to give her mom a lot of credit," Neighbors said. "This was alumni weekend for Missouri women's basketball and Amy had all her teammates in here. They sat behind our bench for most of the game, and I think it gave Saylor a bunch of confidence. And her teammates just rallied around her knowing that she hadn't been able to practice full speed."

Not only did Poffenbarger lead the way with her career-high 24 points, but she also contributed nine rebounds and two assists.

"She felt fresh, she felt good," Neighbors said.

This win continued the Hogs' winning streak to 11 against Missouri.

The women's basketball team will return to Bud Walton Arena on Thursday, Feb. 1, to face the University of Alabama.
