SPRINGDALE, Ark. — Springdale High School alumna Marquesha Davis was drafted to the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) 11th overall to play for New York Liberty on April 15.
Marquesha's three brothers say they are so excited to see her reach her goal.
"She’s been a star but now everybody gets to see how big of a star she is, so it was everything for us," her older brother Robert Young said.
Although she attended Springdale High School, Marquesha is originally from McGehee, Arkansas, a town with a population of about 3,000.
"It’s not normal, we're from a small town so that’s not normal," her twin brother Donzel said. "To be able to experience that and then it [is] your blood sister, it was amazing."
After being drafted she had a message to all the people from not only her town but small towns around the country.
"You know, to come from a small town and to dream big and you know to actually make it is not always easy," she said. "So I would just say to those young girls [to] dream big that everyone in a small town always believes and just keeps going," Davis said.
Her brother Deonte said it's a dream come true for him too.
"It’s a dream come true. It’s not me playing but to be a part of her journey and see where she landed, it feels really good," he said.
Marquesha's twin says he has high expectations for her rookie season.
"Next year, she can be Rookie of the Year MVP or something you know," Donzel said about next season.
Davis' high school English teacher says it was her determination that got her where she is today.
"She was one of the hardest working students I've ever had," Leecie Henson, her junior and senior English teacher, said. "The determination that she showed on the court, she showed in the classroom and was determined to get a scholarship. She was determined to live out her dreams and that's exactly what she's doing."
Davis played three years at Arkansas before transfering to Ole Miss where she finished her college career.
