Beaver Lake accepting Christmas tree donations to be used as fish habitats

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that the trees must be real, not artificial, and completely clear of ornaments and tinsel.

ROGERS, Ark. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) says that it is accepting discarded Christmas trees to be used as fish habitats at Beaver Lake.

The corps says that the trees can be left at the Highway 12 boat ramp, the Monte Ne boat ramp, and the Don Roufa boat ramp.

The donated trees must be put on the side of the ramp so as not to block ramp access or parking areas.

"All trees must be real, not artificial and free of ornaments and tinsel to prevent harm to fish. Trees will be available for anyone interested in using them to provide shelter for fish and serve as attractors for recreational fishing," a USACE release said.

The trees are available to anyone interested in using them as fish cover and must be sunk with natural rock in areas that couldn't create potential boating hazards.

Unclaimed trees will be sunk by USACE or Arkansas Game and Fish at a later date.

Other Arkansas lakes have also been designated as Christmas tree donation spots, with boat ramps at Bull Shoals Lake, Norfork Late and Millwood Tri-Lakes taking donations with the purpose of being turned into fish cover.

Any questions regarding the program can be forwarded to the Beaver Lake Project Office at 479-636-1210.
