One dead, two injured after I-49 crash near the Bobby Hopper Tunnel prompts air evac

Benita Aston, 85, of Lowell, was killed in the crash.

WINSLOW, Arkansas — New information has been released about a crash on I-49 on June 7 that stalled northbound traffic and prompted the response of a medical helicopter near the Bobby Hopper Tunnel around 4:30 p.m. 

A crash report from the Arkansas Department of Public Safety (DPS) says that there were two vehicles involved. In the first one, there was an 85-year-old woman and a 79-year-old man, both from Lowell. In the second was a 22-year-old man from Rogers.

The report says that the first vehicle was traveling north on I-49 when it merged into the second vehicle and collided with it.

Both vehicles exited the roadway, with the second one colliding with a tree before coming to rest.

The 85-year-old woman, identified as Bonita Aston, was killed in the crash. The other two involved were injured.

Arkansas State Police, who investigated the crash, said that conditions were clear and dry.
