OKLAHOMA, USA — A rollover collision that halted all eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic on I-40 at the Oklahoma-Arkansas border on March 4 left a 58-year-old man dead.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), James West of Durant was driving eastbound on I-40 on the inside lane when he veered off the roadway, struck the barrier, and ended up in the westbound lanes of traffic. The impact of the accident "ejected" West into the road where a second, "unknown vehicle" ran him over, the OHP report states.
West was pronounced dead at the scene.
OHP said the cause of the collision is under investigation. The driver of the unknown vehicle was not identified.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) reported the accident at 9 p.m. According to OHP, the roadways were closed for almost three hours between 8:38 p.m. and 11:25 p.m. on Monday.
