Officials warn of impassable road after several vehicles stranded in Washington County

By the afternoon, most vehicles had been safely removed

GOSHEN, Ark. — After icy weather created hazardous travel conditions across Arkansas, a fire department in Washington County warned drivers to avoid a road after residents abandoned their vehicles because the road was too dangerous to continue driving on.

In the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 22, ice and freezing rain fell throughout Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley affecting traffic. Area schools announced closings due to dangerous driving conditions.

Across our area, accumulation was between a tenth of an inch to half an inch of ice. While that may not sound like a lot, a half-inch of pure ice on roads can create tough and even deadly situations for drivers.

On Monday, the Goshen Arkansas Fire District posted photos of stranded vehicles up and down Fire Tower Road, urging residents to avoid the area, calling it "impassable."

"Fire Tower Rd is currently impassable," the post reads. "Tow trucks are not attempting to remove any of these vehicles until the ice has melted. Please avoid this area if at all possible."

By the afternoon, most vehicles had been safely removed and the Washington County road department was on the scene treating the road, using caution in the area was still advised.
