ARKANSAS, USA — Happy Independence Day! Firework displays across Arkansas are getting set up for the big day, but will the weather cooperate?
We have a high degree of confidence that it's going to be excessively hot through most of this week and even for the 4th. Afternoon temperatures are climbing into the upper-90s and heat index values are well into the triple-digits. Heat alerts are in effect for all of 5COUNTRY.
Heat Index Values for Thursday, July 4th:
- Northwest Arkansas: 100° to 105°
- River Valley: 105° to 115°
The big question is will it rain or not? Let's talk about it.
A cold front will be advancing from the northwest. The latest model guidance suggest this front will spark showers and thunderstorms, which may impact some fireworks shows.

Latest forecast data suggests NWA has the highest chance of fireworks shows being impacted by rain. But, to be clear, the River Valley isn't completely in the clear, especially the further west you are. Below you'll see future radar showing the line approaching right as many fireworks shows are set to begin. The key thing to keep in mind is that this is only a simulation, and radar may end up looking a little different. They main takeaway is that there are likely to be at least a few thunderstorms in the area.
A Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather has been outlined by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) for NWA, and a Level 1 for the River valley. The most likely hazards would be frequent lightning and a few damaging wind gusts. Some of the stronger cells may produce heavy rainfall.
Rain chances will increase overnight before beginning to dissipate Friday morning. Behind the front we're expecting cooler temperatures and slightly less humidity.
