NWS releases preliminary report on deadly Benton County tornadoes

The NWS believes two tornadoes occurred in Decatur, and found EF-3 tornado damage northwest of town.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently surveying a tornadic supercell they believe began in Rogers County, Okla., and ended in Carroll County, Ark.

In a preliminary report released Monday morning based on early damage surveys, NWS estimated the number of tornadoes and began to unpack the extensive damage left by the massive supercell.

The NWS believes two tornadoes occurred in Decatur, and found EF-3 tornado damage northwest of town. "This tornado likely began in eastern Delaware County, Oklahoma. We hope to finalize these paths today," the NWS said in the report.

After they surveyed damage west of Centerton in Benton County, NWS said there were likely two tornadoes in that area as well, causing widespread power outages and home damage.

The NWS said extensive wind damage in Bentonville and Rogers led them to estimate more tornadoes touched down there, as well.

"Based on our survey yesterday, combined with a review of radar data, we believe the fatality that occurred in a mobile home east of Rogers and near Beaver Lake was the result of straight-line wind damage from the rear flank downdraft," the NWS said.

Wind speeds in Benton County were 80 to 95 miles per hour based on the damage, according to the preliminary report.

Although the National Weather Service said all this is preliminary right now, on Monday evening final assessments will be made, including full results from the damage surveys.

Seven people died statewide from Sunday's severe storms, according to the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management.
