We set record highs on Christmas Day last year, so how will this year compare to previous years?

Christmas in 2019 was the 3rd warmest on record in Fayetteville with temperatures soaring into the upper 60s! Parts of NW Arkansas even made it into the lower 70s. This year expect highs only in the 40s with wind chills down into the 30s!

Meanwhile in Fort Smith, last year was the 2nd warmest Christmas on record with the mercury hitting the middle 70s! It was a short and a t-shirt type of day. Thankfully though, if you enjoy a cold Christmas, you are in luck for 2020!

CHRISTMAS DAY RECORD COLD

While this year looks to be cold across NW Arkansas and the River Valley, it won't even come close to some of the coldest Christmas Days on record. In Fort Smith, the last time we had a record cold on Christmas was in 1985 when the mercury only reached 25 degrees. In contrast, Santa brought record cold to Fayetteville on Christmas as recently as 2009 with the afternoon high only reaching 26 degrees.

CHRISTMAS DAY RECORD WARMTH

Our area is no stranger to record heat during the holidays. Over the past five years, three of those years included some of the warmest Christmas Days on record in Fayetteville. In Fort Smith, two of those years set record highs on Christmas Day.
