LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) – Attorney General Leslie Rutledge on Jan. 23 requested a second oral argument in the gay marriage case before the Arkansas Supreme Court, according to court documents.

“The state respectfully requests that the court schedule a second oral argument in this appeal, for the benefit of Chief Justice Hannah, Justice Wynne and Justice Wood,” the documents state.

One of the reasons given for requesting a second oral argument in the case is the first oral arguments were heard on Nov. 20, 2014, and Hannah was not present at that time, officials said. Wynne and Wood were also not present for the first oral argument, Rutledge said in her motion requesting the hearing of second oral arguments.

A spokeswoman for the Arkansas Supreme Court said she did not know when the court would decide whether to grant the motion.

Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza overturned the state’s ban on gay marriage in May 2014, which was followed by a stay issued by the Arkansas Supreme Court a few days after. In July 2014, the Arkansas Supreme Court agreed to take up the same-sex marriage lawsuit.
