SPRINGDALE (KFSM) -- As Halloween weekend approaches, parents are looking for alternative ways to take their kids trick or treating.

Although the tradition has always been to go door to door, parents and communities have turned to a new trend: trunk or treating.

Instead of decorating homes, parents and business owners are decorating the trunks of their cars and handing out candy from there.

Trunk or Treating is a fun and safe kid friendly alternative to traditional trick or treating.

Parents dressed up their kids and headed to Arvest Ballpark Friday night for the Trunk or Treat event.

"I honestly think its safer you," said Jana Potter. "You pretty much know everybody who's doing trunk or treat, it's mostly businesses. To me I just feel safer bringing my kids to a trunk or treat."

This was the first year Kara Ault, publisher of Macaroni Kid Fayetteville, hosted the event.

There were more than 1,600 kids who registered for the event and about 35 local businesses showed up to provide candy and treats for kids.

The event featured a bounce house, obstacle course and pony rides for kids.

Ault said she is hoping for an every bigger turnout next year.
